I caught the middle of a typically smug NPR interview this morning with a man who has made a movie called Doubt about nuns. He was opining, to the self-satisfied murmurs of the NPR person, that Doubt Is Good, because it enables you to have an open mind. With sureness and orthodoxy comes authoritarianism, and so we must uphold the doubt principle, always and everywhere. What struck me was the blindness to the reigning orthodoxy, which – while pretending to be diverse – allows absolutely no dissent. We are shocked when Muslims outlaw blasphemy, but differ with the Western inquisition on a range of matters, and you are pilloried, economically crushed, and cast into the outer darkness. Maybe even jailed.
