Does ‘Liberation’ Look Like This?

My family and I had the misfortune of attending a Southern Baptist church in Georgia on July 4, 2010, as the pastor preached a sermon that could have been written by the editors of the Weekly Standard. Among the many things for which he was “thankful” was “the liberation of Iraq.”

This morning on the radio I listened to an interview with a woman who left Iraq 20 years ago and recently returned to see Baghdad and her old Christian neighborhood in ruins. As she goes through the city, she finds the place dirty and lifeless, not exactly a place where “liberation” has taken place. Americans, and especially the conservative evangelicals and neoconservatives who had major roles in supporting destructive U.S. military actions, have moved onto other things such as going to war with Iran in search of more victims to “liberate.” I recommend reading the story and listening to the broadcast just to get a sense of how destructive — and utterly dishonest — U.S. policy has been this past decade.
