The ID-checking trend here in upstate NY has reached ridiculous levels. Since store employees can be held criminally liable for selling alcohol to people under 21, store policies are changing. Indeed, their policy is now clearly marked in every checkout lane. Cashiers are asking everyone for ID regardless of age.
I was at the grocery store yesterday and the person in line in front of me was easily into his mid 60s yet he was asked to show ID. Regardless of how one feels about “underage” alcohol purchases (or use), it’s sad when stores have to adopt these silly policies of carding everyone. At the same time, however, grocery stores are in the business of selling groceries and making money, so it’s understandable that they want to keep their employees safe and avoid problems.
Yet this trend is dangerous. It turns society into blind and obedient followers, making us believe that the state is there to protect us. Personal responsibility and common sense are going down the drain.8:43 am on June 20, 2007 Email Manuel Lora
