… and this is a good one. Local government in Our Nation’s Capital is heavily subsidized by the US taxpayer. Well, it seems that some local pol’s apparently object to the notion that the federal government should be the only engine of corruption in town.
So the sharp-eyed local gendarmes have just discovered that a gal working in the DC tax office has stolen a cool fifty MILLION over the past twenty years.
Willie Sutton used to rob banks because “that’s where the money is.” It appears that DC tax office bureaucrat Harriette Walters has, shall we say, updated that maxim.
“What is the state but a gang of robbers, if it has not justice,” asks Augustine (City of God, Book IV, Chapter 4). Harriette has certainly done her homework.
