Day of Liberation

For those interested in this subject, I’ll simply say that I cannot believe I have lived to see this: the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of Pope Benedict XVI, freeing the pre-conciliar liturgy. Relevant text here, explanatory letter here. I have an op-ed on this slated for publication in the Washington Examiner on Monday, and I’ll write a piece about it for LRC later next week.

All civilized people can rejoice at this, in the spirit of Agatha Christie and the other non-Catholics who petitioned the Holy See for the old liturgy’s retention in 1971. As I say, details and explanation to come. Right now, simply shock and awe (the good kind).
