Dave Brubeck, R.I.P.

On the day before his 92nd birthday, one of the creative geniuses of modern jazz died. Dave Brubeck — along with his colleague, Paul Desmond — brought a very lively energy to popular music. My wife and I were fortunate to hear his group perform live some four decades ago. In my Calculated Chaos book, I envisioned the universe chugging along to the lively spirited pace provided by jazz, and offered Brubeck’s “Take Five” as accompaniment for the life force.
