The UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions (in other words, murders) is Christof Heyns. He suggested recently that some of the U.S. drone strikes may be war crimes.
A previous Special Rapporteur, Philip Alston, condemned drone killings as overly expansive (in other words, without a basis in the law applicable to war and self-defense): “…if other states were to claim the broad-based authority that the United States does, to kill people anywhere, anytime, the result would be chaos.” Other states are already ramping up spending on drone technology. The U.S. is spreading its use of drones to the Pacific and Latin America.
