Creation of Medicare

This history of Medicare is useful — for the intelligent reader who understands how to interpret the events and statements from a free market standpoint, because this isn’t written by someone unfavorable to Medicare. Far from it. I could write a book merely by giving my reactions to the statements made in this book, from the very first sentence onwards. But this is one of the reasons this work is useful. Written in 1969, it presents a line of thinking in support of socialized medicine in a form that’s clear enough to bring forth rebuttal at every turn. It shows you the lengthy political process by which this was put across. One clear starting date is 1906, for example, when the American Association for Labor Legislation began out of the University of Wisconsin. It began (in Fabian socialist gradualist style) by pushing successfully for workman’s compensation laws.
