“Congress Shall Have the Power to Speak Out”

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine defends President Bush’s power, as commander-in-chief, to send more troops to Iraq. But, she goes on, Congress has a “duty to speak out.” Good grief! Is this all she envisions for the role of Congress in dealing with the criminality of the executive branch? Is she unfamiliar with the powers of impeachment given to Congress? Has she – and most of her colleagues – managed to reduce themselves to the wimpish task of “speaking out?” Perhaps they should stop holding committee hearings and return to their offices, there to content themselves with writing letters-to-the-editor!
