I finally saw Spider Man 3 this weekend, and, while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I agree with Jeff Tucker that the film reflects an Old Left view of the world as consisting of evil capitalists and a hopeless, downtrodden proletariat. (Warning, spoilers after the jump.)One plot twist that stuck out for me was how Peter Parker was able to obtain a permanent staff position at the Daily Beagle (along with, presumably, a considerable increase in salary from what he was making as free-lancer) only after he is “infected” with the mysterious space junk that turns him into a ruthless, selfish, back-stabbing SOB. The clear message is that, contra Hayek, it is under capitalism that the worst get on top.
