Catholics and the Culture Wars

Many readers have heard about the recent collision between the Catholic Church and the Obama Administration over its “mandate” only from the usual suspects. Yet, the conflict poses some serious challenges to the way we do charity — voluntarily — versus the “mandatory charity” of government.

The battle — for that’s what it is — marks a turning point in a long war. It must be carefully considered, for it has implications far beyond politics.

I focus on one of the consequences, the impact of the mandate on  genuine charity under an increasingly tyrannical regime, in today’s online issue of Crisis, a Catholic magazine that has addressed the Church-state issue for thirty years.
