The Carbon Trust, a government-funded firm, is working with food and drink companies to calculate the “carbon footprints” of products – sometimes with surprising results.
We are headed for this in the U.S. All items we consume, both durable consumer goods and food, will have to be approved by a government agency headed by a Carbon Footprint Czar who will determine what will be collectively consumed by the citizenry. Perhaps we’ll be able to trade carbon footprint rights – I can give up lamb, beef, and alcohol if I want Fiji water. Remember that Michelle Obama, just as she was moving into the ultimate lap of luxury (the White House), told Americans that we were going to have to give up a piece of our pie so that so that someone else can have more. Since then, we hear all about how big the Obama pie is getting.
