Canada’s Cash for Clunkers Go Boom

Remember the Cash for Clunkers absurdity? Canada’s sister version of the program, Retire Your Ride, was also a laughingstock, as reported by the media.

The Conservatives announced the so-called scrappage program in 2008. It offered Canadians incentives, such as public transit passes and small amounts of cash, to junk older vehicles.

…The document says the government’s goal of getting 200,000 old cars and trucks off the road was “too ambitious.” The feds ultimately fell short of their goal, bringing in around 130,000 vehicles.

A consulting firm evaluated the program and reported that the program’s objectives were unclear, the line of authority was ambiguous, issues went unresolved, and overall, the program was poorly managed. Shocking. Thanks to Charles Everett for the link.
