Bush versus Bush on Georgia

Which Bush do you believe?

“America keeps its word,” the president brayed in Baghdad (please ignore the fact that he had bypassed America’s Constitution to get us there. “America” hadn’t said a word.).

But now, as Lew often reminds us, Bush has broken America’s word to Russia, and Arnaud de Borchgrave, who actually knows the difference between Atlanta and Tbilisi, spells it out:

“For several years after the implosion of the Soviet empire, and the end of the Cold War, the U.S. assured Boris Yeltsin and his successor Vladimir Putin that Washington was not interested in expanding NATO’s writ to include former Soviet republics. That assurance was ignored when the three Baltic states were voted in to the NATO club.”

And Bush continues to ignore America’s assurance, because he apparently has a higher priority than keeping America’s word.

Unlike most of the “strategists” in this administration, Arnaud is an adult. Read the rest.
