Block on Barnett

Walter’s analysis of Barnett’s embrace of the Iraq war is well worth reading. But there is a tip-off to Barnett’s apparent soft commitment to libertarian sentiments: his early career as a prosecutor for the state. There is a lesson for all who profess libertarian principles but then rally ’round the flag. That lesson is to be found in Clarence Darrow’s classic observation: “there are those who run with the hunters, and those who run with the hunted.” At a time of crisis, where do our inclinations take us?
