An official of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was interviewed regarding a report that the county will, sometime this month, begin utilizing an unmanned “drone” aircraft for surveillance purposes. In response to the question that this might create a “big brother” system, he stated: “you have nothing to fear from your own government – you are being watched by your fellow citizens.”
What is most disturbing in such a comment is the realization that this man – and other police functionaries in America, along with a boobeoisie that accepts such practices – probably believes that what he says is true. It is just such a belief that produces a lack of concern for the state intruding itself more and more into our lives. It is that lack of concern that IS “big brother.”
