Bentonville Correction

A reader, Clyde, informed me that the town of Bentonville was named after Thomas Hart Benton’s uncle (of the same name) rather than Thomas Hart Benton the artist. That the uncle — a senator from Missouri — was one of the principal advocates of that wicked idea known as “Manifest Destiny” (still very much alive in America) makes the town name far less attractive. I have always liked the way my Irish relatives have honored their creative people (e.g., their poets, novelists, etc.) by putting their names and faces on Irish currency. I must have unconsciously thought — aided by some brief research — that this town in northwest Arkansas might have had similar inclinations. My apologies.
