Benoit Mandelbrot, RIP

Benoit Mandelbrot, the mathematician responsible for coining the word “fractal,” died at the age of 85.  Fractal geometry has been popularized in the computerized forms that keep repeating themselves at different levels of scaling, and has played an important role in identifying and analyzing patterns found throughout nature.  He was a central figure in the emerging science of “chaos.”
