I love (and loved, as a kid) the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. They are so entertaining and filled with an abundance of smart humor. I have always thought that Don Rickles is one of the great comedians of all time. (I am currently reading Rickles’ Book: A Memoir.) Watch this snippet of Don Rickles from a Dean Martin Celebrity Roast for the magnificent Sammy Davis, Jr. The entire segment breaks every rule in the modern book of political correctness — these days will never return. This was television not too long ago, when I was a kid. Nowadays, the Oprahized, Dr. Phil-addicted, hypersensitive, “offended” masses who purport to be the luminaries of tolerance would imprison people for hate crimes for performing this bit in a private club, let alone on television.
Yet, as these folks say, they laugh about black and white “because we must laugh.”
