He — and everyone else — ought to read Milton Mayer’s wonderful report on his experiences with ordinary German people right after World War II. Inquiring as to what it was like living under Nazi tyranny, those with whom he conversed were unanimous in their assessment, and gave Mayer the title for his book: They Thought They Were Free.
