Anti-Government Hate Crime?

A colleague today told me about the murder of the census worker in rural Kentucky, and he told me in a way in which I think he believed I was going to approve of it, since he was working for the federal government.  What I did tell him, however, was that the idea that this somehow was a federal crime was absurd, even though the feds are investigating it.

(According to the law, the killing or assault of any federal worker — full-time or part-time — is a federal crime.  Given the dishonesty of the FBI as an investigative body and the perfidy of federal prosecutors, I would not be surprised if the feds were to charge and convict the wrong person.)
