From a reader who hates the war on drugs more than I do:
I lost my beloved younger sister to a methadone OD going on 10 years ago. She was 40 at the time. She’d been busted for weed, had an opiate problem but was able to get all the methadone she wanted. Having known her as I did, it was accidental. As messed up as she was, she’d never leave her kids. She had been using weed to wean herself from opiates. I know from firsthand experience that it works. Had she been smoking weed instead of getting busted and using the Official State Poison (part of her “treatment”), there’s a good chance she’d still be here. The only people served by methadone are the people that make and distribute it. The State makes poisons like alcohol and Corporate Tobacco “legal,” yet renders proven nontoxic substances untouchable to one and all.
