A Non-Solution in Search of a Problem

O’Fallon, Missouri, is a town of 74,767, according to the “2005–2009 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.” Ninety-one percent of those residents identify themselves as white; another 4.6 are black. There are 6 “Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders” running about the place, and 2.2% are “Hispanic or Latino (of any race).” Yet illegal immigrants so threaten O’Fallonites that its city council has declared it a “Rule of Law” city. That means “the city will not hinder or restrict employee communications [sic for ‘snitching’] with federal officials related to the immigration status of individuals. It also directs police to cooperate with state and federal authorities regarding immigration enforcement.”

I’m trying to understand why Mary Midwest would fear immigrants, legal or otherwise, more than she does Officer Ninja, who stops and harasses her son every time he drives his pick-up downtown.

Seems the non-existent aliens are draining O’Fallon’s resources, however. The council also voted not to “provide public benefits to illegal immigrants.” Now if they’ll only withhold them from legal residents, too, we’ll be getting somewhere.
