A Former Prosecutor’s Take on the Duke Indictments

Yesterday, I spoke to a neighbor who is a former prosecutor in our county. She agreed that given the facts of the Duke non-rape case, these criminal charges are transparently false. Furthermore, she told me that she believed the only thing driving the case was the desire of Michael Nifong to win his recent election.

The fact of this case, she said, would not have led her or her former staff to have sought rape indictments. I suspect prosecutors elsewhere are saying the same thing.

Thus, this tells us something about the injustices that prosecutors are able to inflict. Even though people in the legal system believe the prosecutor is out of control, no one — and certainly no one who has authority in the North Carolina system of “justice” — is willing to step in and put a stop to this madness. Isn’t politics wonderful?
