Republicans and UN Resolutions

Why all the Republican concern about UN resolutions? What was the title of the 1991 congressional resolution to war against Iraq the first time? "Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Pursuant to United Nations Security Council Resolution 678." Only two Republicans in the Senate and three in the House voted against the resolution. And look what is in the 2002 congressional resolution to war against Iraq the second time:

Whereas United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 authorizes the use of all necessary means to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 and subsequent relevant resolutions and to compel Iraq to cease certain activities that threaten international peace and security, including the development of weapons of mass destruction and refusal or obstruction of United Nations weapons inspections.

Only one Republican in the Senate and six in the House voted against this resolution. If the Republicans really wanted to get out of the UN, they could have done so when they controlled the Congress and the presidency for over four years under Bush. But of course they did nothing. Just like they will do nothing if they regain total control of the government again in 2012.
