I Hate Boycotts

Collectivist efforts, motivated by politics, to get others to refuse to do business with firms or individuals in a hated country, have always struck me as highly unfortunate. The purpose of commerce, after all, is social cooperation. So, during the Cold War, I loved to buy products from "behind the Iron Curtain." Even if workers are slaves, as anti-communists claimed, that is all the more reason to buy, since it increases their value and therefore makes abuse less likely. I sought out Chilean and South African wines when I was not supposed to. I look for Chinese products today, and would love to find Cuban and North Korean goods to buy. I despise the anti-trade bluenoses. So now, I guess I need to plan a vacation in Arizona.

UPDATE from Chris Rupe:

I find them silly as well. I personally love Venezuelan and Ecuadorean dark chocolate.

UPDATE Years ago, during the Cesar Chavez grape brouhaha, an economist pointed out that if the liberals really wanted to help the workers, they would eat grapes until they turned purple.
