A West Virginia woman who claimed to have been kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and tortured, for racial reasons, now has come clean. Megan Williams made the whole thing up. You'll notice in the story people wonder why anyone would have pleaded guilty to a crime he did not commit—several of her victims are still in prison. Here is the easy, if politically incorrect, answer: the criminal-justice system encourages it. If a man is accused of a serious crime, especially a politically tinged one, he is usually given this choice: plead guilty to a lesser offense and serve a shorter term in a more comfortable cage.
