My thanks to Gary North for writing the best review of The Passion that I have read so far. North finally injects a little reason into the debate. It seems that on one side all the reviews have been “Mel Gibson is Hitler,” or “Boo Hoo, Christians are so mean!” while on the other side all the reviews say things like “This movie was so great I wanted to vomit!” or “Mel Gibson is the next best thing to Saint Paul!”
Although I haven’t yet seen the movie, I fail to see how any of the above can be remotely true. North’s review finally provides us with a good account of Gibson’s triumphs and his failures in interpreting the scriptures. I must say that Gibson’s omission of “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? ” is nothing short of bizarre, but I shall reserve any more comments for after I have seen the film.
