Why is Puerto Rico — the parents of Obama’s supreme hailed from there — still a US colony? The island was captured by the US in its war of aggression against Spain. President McKinley prayed all night, he said, and God told him to sink the wooden Spanish fleet, kill plenty of heathen Spaniards, and capture the remaining Spanish colonies, including Puerto Rico. In the name of freedom, of course. So why, after all these years, isn’t that small country free of foreign occupation? Here the liberal Timothy Noah asks the same question. My view: ¡Viva Puerto Rico Libre!
