They came first for the drunk drivers...

In our latest journey into the Bizarro World of Daddy Gunvernment, the "enlightened" legislators in the People's Republic of New Jersey have decided--in their infinite ignorance--to pass something called "Kyleigh's Law."

"New Jersey today became the first state in the nation requiring teen drivers to display a decal on their vehicles...[the law was] named after Kyleigh D'Alessio, a 16-year-old Long Valley resident who was killed in a December 2006 car crash involving a teen driver.

The other bill Corzine signed into law limits young drivers to only one¹ passenger in a car unless accompanied by an adult, forbids the use of wireless communications and sets the night driving limit at 11 p.m.² instead of at midnight."

Is it just me, having been born into a Jewish family, or does this remind LRC Blog readers of the Yellow Star that the Nazis required Jews to wear to distinguish themselves from the rest of the German population? They too, as you recall, were considered a danger to their society.

¹Why just one? This is like minimum wage laws--how did they determine that one is safe, but two or more might be dangerous?
²My grandfather, in his infinite wisdom, used to tell my mother that a kid could just as easily come home early, yet have done some mischief--or could stay out late, yet have behaved well. I don't know if Papa was the originator of this concept, but such rational thinking obviously has not crossed the reptilian minds of the New Jersey state legislators.
