Crooks like Bernie Madoff, who ripped off $50 billion from wealthy individuals and important NYC institutions, were stopped. If the boom had continued, he would have stolen even more. As it was, when the new investors stopped coming in the door, he could no longer pay off the older ones, and kaboom, with his own sons turning him into the feebs. But at least the fraud ceased. They don't call it a correction for nothing.
