Protectionism for Me, But Not for Thee

According to Pat Choate and Pat Buchanan, American industry needs tariff protection in order to compete with foreign industry. On the other hand, according to this article by Choate in the December 15 issue of The American Conservative, protectionism when practiced by foreign countries is a bad thing because it makes American automobiles less competitive in those countries, and the U.S. government should pressure them to end it. There is much more economic ignorance in that article, but that particular bit of hypocrisy just jumped out at me.
