When I heard this story on NPR last night, it was told as a feel-good holiday piece. I would like to believe that you don’t have to be super-intelligent, nor do you have to be an anti-state libertarian to understand that this is extortion, and it is oppressive. The cops in Sansom Park, TX are pulling over motorists for alleged moving violations and giving them a “ticket for tots” as opposed to a *real* ticket. This is called “spreading holiday cheer.” Now of course, the purpose of this is not to steer clear of giving people tickets, but to pull over as many people as possible in order to impress upon them the need for a “donation” to the police toy fund. The story says that in the low-income community “a lot of the kids are not going to have a Christmas at all.” And so? Why should that become everyone else’s problem? This is just another example of the crazed police state being used for every purpose except to “serve and protect.” Perhaps we should send more of our military troops overseas to round up toys for tots at gunpoint. We could call that initiative ‘tyranny for tots.’
