I appreciated Walter Block’s advice to a frustrated young libertarian stuck with a non-libertarian girlfriend. Here are some additional thoughts on this common problem.
First, young libertarian men needn’t be in such a hurry to find a long-term girlfriend or wife that they settle for a non-libertarian. There are, in fact, libertarian women in the world — but you have to do the work to find them rather than just settle for whoever happens to be around. The internet makes sorting the wheat from the chaff easier than ever. And if it does take a while to find the right one, then in the meantime the young man can be involved with other women on a shorter-term basis — I’m sure they can find things to do with each other besides discuss libertarian theory.
Second, if there aren’t any desirable libertarian girls around, make some. I assume most people who would be dealing with this issue are relatively young men. So find a girl your age or younger who is intelligent but hasn’t given much thought to these issues because she’s been devoting her attention to other matters thus far in life, and set her on the right path — both with ideas and with you.
Again, the key is to be active, not passive. The ideal world would offer us nubile young libertarian women in abundance; in the real world, man must work.
