That is what many Christians did in church today. Songs like:

We salute you land of liberty
My country tis of thee
America

are hymns, not to the Lord Jesus Christ, but to the state. They have no place in a church. Unfortunately, some songs that have no place in or out of a church were also sung in church today. Songs like the blasphemous Battle Hymn of the Republic.
