The left progressives won’t vote Republican, no matter how pro-market Obama supposedly is. He should not move to the center by ditching his less-belligerent-than-McCain foreign policy views. Instead, he should keep championing the cause of relative peace, a popular distinction between him and the worse Democrats, while moving toward a more pro-market position domestically. He can keep his middle-class tax-cut plan, and should, while abandoning his soak-the-rich agenda — instead, he should suggest paying for the tax cuts with deep cuts in imperial spending. And he should hammer McCain for selling out habeas corpus with the Military Commissions Act — which Obama, to his credit, did not support. He can also distance himself from Clintonian (and McCainian) gun-grabbing. That would win a million votes right there. In other words, by being more libertarian, he can win the White House. (Unfortunately, he can probably also win by being less libertarian, and this is the path taken by almost all seeking absolute power.)
