Artists as Terrorists

I am not a fan of the type of art that Steven Kurtz produces, but I recognize his right to freedom of expression and to call it art if he so pleases. The FBI, on the other hand, has over-reacted to his art and made his professional and personal life extremely difficult. The effects of their actions will probably continue to adversely effect Mr. Kurtz for the rest of his life. I have a problem with that.

There's an interview with Steven Kurtz in Nature, now that he has been cleared of whatever made-up charges the feds tried to pin on him. He mixes science with art to try to educate the public about current events. This means he has a lab in his house, of which he insightfully notes:

Say someone wants to have a laboratory in their house. I guess not a lot of people have that any more, so that's weird. And because it's weird, it's suspicious. And because it's suspicious, we have to think it's probably terrorism.

Although he's been cleared of charges, he is still fighting the state (good for him!):

[Interviewer:] Has the US Department of Justice returned any of your materials?

[Kurtz:] That's the next fight for me: to try to get my lab equipment back and other things that they took, like my computers and books.
