And rejects his endorsement due to his comments about the Holocaust (although Hagee’s anti-Catholic views don’t seem to bother McCain too much). McCain wishes he would have never gotten the endorsement, but if he didn’t, he probably wouldn’t have won Texas, and Huckabee would have hung around in the race until Pennsylvania in late April.
Which gets me thinking: looking back at the primary, can anybody explain why Romney dropped out? He had the support to beat McCain in most of the remaining states and would have easily beat McCain in a floor fight (and could have bought out Huckabee w/ a VP slot), with the bulk of the GOP establishment already backing Romney. McCain must have had something on him, and if that’s the case, there’s no way he would pick him as VP. Maybe he’ll pick Lieberman and have a unity NeoCon ticket, which would hasten the GOP crack-up and be an electoral windfall for the LP; I can only hope.
