Christian Charity vs. Government “Charity”

Mike Sawyer writes:

“Great article today. I am a born again Christian and believe one of the worst things that ever happened to the Christian church is the advent of government social programs taking the place of the churches in supplying these needs. The Lord Jesus told us that it is more blessed to give than to receive, and we let the government steal our blessing (as well as our money). Today most church people will steer their people to government welfare programs before attempting to obey the Lord in helping out themselves.

“I am a case in point. I am 53 years old with nine children. We bought a small grocery store in June of last year and it is not producing like we thought it would. I have a physical handicap that prevents me from just ‘getting a job at Wal Mart.’ I live in an area of the country where jobs are not all that plentiful, and I don’t have an education to fall back on. I have been repeatedly counselled by an elder in our church to go and get training paid for by a government grant, or to go on disability, etc. I was told this is ‘not a moral issue.’ These men simply cannot understand that it IS a moral issue to me. To me it would be stealing. They do not get it, or they don’t want to.

“I believe the church is irrelevant to correct the problems of this country because we have forsaken the real ‘red letter’ portions of the gospels and tried to replace the true words of Jesus for government power. It will never work.”
