On the Iowa Tailgate Rally

Writes Joshua Matthews: "Regarding your blog post on Dr. Ron Paul's tailgating rally. The article you cite is a little snide about the drunkenness and 'anarchy' at this event. I was there, and there were no visible signs of drunks, raucousness, or underage drinking. Just the opposite. Groups of adults were grilling out and lots of children were tossing footballs. During Paul's speech I did see one drunk, who looked like he was just listening, but everyone else was enthusiastic, including the kid in the picture the article included. (Those kids in the photo were acting like Dr. Paul was a rock star!)

"Having been at churches where one can eyeball the crowd and then look at the attendance number they put up, I'd say that 200 is a low turnout number. I would've guessed 350+. And probably 50 or so --many of them college students-- were sitting around on the grass, waiting long and patiently for the rally to officially start. That's tough to get kids to do on a Saturday morning. But the writer is probably spot on in his estimate that '90%' were sure-thing supporters. There might be some surprises come caucus time in January."
