Bob Jones III, the fundamentalist Christian chancellor of the fundamentalist Christian university that bears his name has just endorsed the Mormon Mitt Romney for president. Jones thinks it would be a "disaster" if either Guiliani or Hillary got elected since they are "pro-choice candidates." He also said that it "boils down to who can best represent conservative American beliefs."
Bob Jones has lost his mind. Even if Romney had excellent pro-life credentials (which he doesn't--see this analysis by Chuck Baldwin), that is not the only issue that Jones should be concerned about. We know who the only candidate is who is both pro-life and best represents conservative American beliefs, and it is certainly not Mitt Romney.
Jones, like many conservative Christians, is greatly deceived. First, he thinks that Republicans are an alternative to Democrats. They're not, and in fact many times are worse because they cloak their socialism and statism with free market rhetoric and patriotism. And second, just because someone is opposed to abortion doesn't mean that he is pro-life. No one who is pro-war is really pro-life. The life of a foreigner on the battlefield is worth just as much as the life of an American in the womb.
On the Republican Party, see Tom DiLorenzo and Clyde Wilson and Anthony Gregory and yours truly. On Bob Jones III as a Bush-lover, see my "Fundamentalist Foolishness."
It would be a disaster if any Republican or Democrat got elected, except the only one who is pro-life in every sense of the word. As much as I loathe Hillary, Bush is far worse, especially with a Republican Congress. At least with a Democrat like Hillary in the White House, some of the Republicans will start acting like the conservatives they claim to be.
