The Nazi Welfare State

Did the German people acquiesce to Nazi rule because of Hitler’s extensive welfare state? That is the thesis of Hitler’s Beneficiaries: Plunder, Racial War, and the Nazi Welfare State, a provocative new book by Götz Aly. Reason’s Michael Moynihan provides an insightful and largely favorable review although he disagrees with Aly’s conclusions. The willingness of people to put up with tyranny in exchange for the illusion of economic security is something libertarians should spend more time examining.
