For the past couple years, there's been an intense "realignment" of college athletics conferences. Maryland left the ACC for the Big Ten. This morning, Louisville left the Big East for the ACC. Most of the institutions involved are government-run universities.
So if it's okay for a state institution like Maryland to dissolve its prior political bonds with other states and form new ones, shouldn't the same be true of the people at-large? Perhaps if we called it "realignment" like the athletics people do instead of "secession," people would get on board with the idea.
