A recent reader email prompted this thought. While I avoid most grains most of the time, in keeping with the spirit of an 80-20 rule (or usually better, in my case), I love the occasional popcorn night. I buy organic, non-GMO popcorn at Detroit Eastern Market, and I pop it in a Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper on the stove, in coconut oil from the Philippines. I then smother the popcorn in melted raw butter (that I buy illegally from an Amish farmer) and celtic sea salt and pepper.
Too often, people are confused by the various streams of paleo dogma, leading them to believe that perfection is the only prescription to move upward from the SAD (Standard American Diet). Most paleos (or primalists) do not advocate a strict dogma; it is essential to understand this. I see people turning paleo and becoming what I call "food frightened," or afraid of eating one strand of gluten, one dollop of grain, or worse, they punish themselves for drinking wine or coffee. Fermented grapes and real coffee beans are nature's gifts, and each provides their own unique stimulant. I partake of healthy doses of each.
