re: Phil Ochs: I Ain’t Marching Anymore

Jack Beale writes:

“I’m just sitting here watching Lew’s recent post (Peter Ochs: I ain’t marching anymore) with tears running down my face. I used to be a lot more militant and unforgiving about international affairs. My attitude was that if they threatened our (USA’s) safety, we should obliterate them. Now, after finding Ron Paul just before he started his run for pres in 2008 (I found him in Dec 2007, after a discussion with a colleague about whether we declared war in Iraq – I was sure we had – another story in itself), and finding LRC soon after that, my attitude has turned just about 180 degrees. I cannot believe that our tax dollars, and our approval, are given toward the unbelievable amount of death we bring the rest of the world. I can only believe that if the American people (and especially the Christian community – of which I am a part) could see the result of what a bomb does to a civilian population, they would rise up and reject this government, and their former selves. Fear and defensiveness (flight and fight) are amazing galvanizers. It’s amazing what the human mind will rationalize when they feel threatened…We always find a way to rationalize our evil.”
