I hate that Beltway phrase, first used by British Tories who love the state themselves, but wanted to criticize it oh so slightly under Labour. As Murray Rothbard said, the state is actually a gang of thieves, a criminal operation involved in looting and killing as its normal, everyday business. The notion of the state as a too-intrusive servant, appropriate for children but not for adults, is just propaganda.
