Imperial Hubris

The April 21 edition of The American Conservative, in its "Fourteen Days" section, brought to my attention this column by Arnaud de Borchgrave, which features this chilling paragraph:

The full impact of Mr. Bush's answer to a question put to him by a European author in a private Oval office meeting a year ago leaves no room for doubt [as to what Bush's successor will inherit]. After an optimistic briefing on Iraq, the author asked the president, "What about your successor?" Mr. Bush replied: "Don't worry about him. We'll fix it so he'll be locked in."

Of course we know one candidate who wouldn't care about how "locked in" he supposedly was, but does anyone think McCain, Clinton, or Obama would even attempt to break free? No, they'd just use it as an excuse to maintain and expand the American empire, which every one of them wants to do.
