A bunch of nitwits thought they would take 5 miles of Michigan Avenue in Detroit and turn it into Michigan's first attempt at HOV lanes, thereby making a bad traffic situation even worse. They want to reserve the right lane, during prime rush hours, for those who just happen to have two or more people in the car. HOV lanes - which grant a specified privilege to people who commute within government guidelines - have never been put into place in Michigan. This was an attempt to make people suffer during the awful I-75 freeway shutdown. Governments, with their HOV lanes, fully intend to make drivers suffer for not abiding by their collectivist decrees for politically correct driving.
Oops - so now the Detroit cops have found out they cannot ticket people for ignoring the HOV signs.....because there are no references to car-pool lanes in the Michigan Vehicle Code! Since "HOV" is not defined anywhere by Michigan law, the tickets cannot stand up in court. So the transportation nazis are rushing to enact a state law defining HOV lanes so that they can control who gets privileges and who suffers because they don't follow orders.
In the meantime, he said, MDOT recognizes HOV lanes will work only under the honor system.
"We hope people will observe it and do the right thing in the HOV lanes," Johnson said.
Honor what? The "right thing" to do is to fully engage that right lane, while driving solo, and enjoy the fact that one more totalitarian decree - one that is meant to punish you - has been delayed, allowing you to go on peacefully with your day. For now.
