Free China

Writes a friend: “Your latest blog post reminded me of a story when I was a internal auditor visiting China. My team was doing a financial audit of one of my company’s manufacturing facilities over there. One of the team members was interviewing the Controller for the factory about why the factory was not withholding taxes from the employees’ paychecks. The Controller’s response floored him. She said something to the effect of ‘Our location is far enough from the Government that they will never know’. Can you imagine a financial person in one of the big government compliant corporations in the US ever saying something like that? It seems the spririt of John Hancock, Patrick Henry and Sam Adams is much more alive in China than it is in the US.”
