Writes Joe Schembrie: "Is Socialized Water even drinkable these days? The water at my apartment complex, in an upscale neighborhood a mile from Microsoft HQ, is so chalky-tasting that I can't even use it to boil spaghetti. And the water in the place I lived in before this -- I took one look at the tap and didn't even try!

"I buy one-gallon jugs of 'store-brand' drinking water at the supermarket for $1 each. When they're empty, I refill them from a coin-operated machine at the front of the store for 35 cents. Then after a few reuses, I throw out the jugs rather than bother cleaning them. I figure good-tasting, healthy drinking water costs me no more than 50 cents a gallon.

"It's a small price to pay for not having to trust government with my health. But what does that say about politicians, when they want to manage every aspect of our medical care, but can't even maintain the purity of a commodity as simple as water in accordance with their own legislated health standards."
